Takahashi’s studio, Monolith Soft, is owned by Nintendo, who’s been a vital partner for Square Enix on the HD-2D games. Remaking Xenogears would finally provide the opportunity to see the game play out properly, and breathe new life into the franchise. In 2017, a Kotaku interview with Takahashi confirmed that the development team simply didn’t have time to complete everything, and disc two turned into a montage so Takahashi could still tell the story he wanted. Over on Final Fantasy’s official Twitter account, the team behind the pixel remaster showed off what this version of Final Fantasy 6 looks like in all its Super Nintendo-era goodness. Xenogears is infamous for having a fantastic first disc, but when players moved onto the second disc it felt completely unfinished.
